My way through Choriocarcinoma

Some of you know, some of you have heard through the grape wine and some of you just don’t know.  So I wanted to let you all know that last month I was diagnosed with pregnancy cancer called choriocarcinoma.  It is form of cancer that forms from molar pregnancy and it needs chemo treatment, but it is curable and the prognosis for this type of cancer is 95% curable.

This was discovered by my OBGYN after having positive pregnancy tests but no visible form of pregnancy anywhere. After going through CT, PET/CT, and MRI it was revealed that I have a tumor in my lungs that is producing the pregnancy hormones. To my advantage my hormone levels are very low and the tumor is only in one spot, so I have very good prognosis. On April 5th, I started my first round of chemotherapy which is distributed through IV and will be 4 days in a row with 12 day break in between the treatments. At first, the week went well, but when the weekend came I got to experience the “fun” side effects of chemo (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores). After that weekend I experienced some dizziness thanks to me not drinking enough but that was an easy fix. After the first round my blood work is reporting a reduction in my hormone levels so for now the chemo is working.

Round two of treatment started on Tuesday. My blood work from Wednesday was not so good and it seems my body is fighting the drugs a little, so today I am starting a different chemo that is administered in the hospital and I have to stay overnight. This is the real deal so I will have fun shopping for a wig and a scarf so Terezka is not scared of bold mommy. On the bright side, I will save some money on shaving and shampoos :) Hopefully no more surprises. One can always hope right? Anyway, I wanted to let you all know, so the news is out. If you guys want to call me and talk please feel free, and I can bore you with all of my doctor stories :).  Peter has been my support through this and I can’t imagine going through this without him. Terezka makes me smile everyday and keeps me very busy so I don’t have time to think too much. She goes to daycare twice a week to give me a break to rest but so far they both have been my support.

Besides both of our Families, Moni ,Erika & Kristi you have been there for me and I want to thank you. Thanks for all the phone calls, emails, babysitting, and lunches. You are the best and can’t imagine better friends!!!!!

I am not telling you this to make you feel sorry for me, I just wanted to share what I have been going through and some of my realizations through this process. It really takes a miracle to have a healthy baby. So please treasure those you have, pray for those you have lost, and pray for those who are trying to become parents of a little tiny miracle(s).

I will keep you all posted after next round of my adventure. Normally there is 8 rounds of treatments with this type of cancer but since it is all dependent on my hormones it is hard to say how long it will take. So keep your fingers crossed for me :)
